Meiji period

Japanese:
Meiji period
Literally, it refers to the period from September 8, 1868 (Keio 4/Meiji 1), when the era name was changed to Meiji, to the time when Crown Prince Yoshihito ascended to the throne and the era name was changed to Taisho following the death of Emperor Meiji on July 30, 1912. This does not coincide with the reign of Emperor Meiji, who ascended to the throne on January 9, 1867, and therefore does not include the period before the adoption of the one emperor, one era system. In terms of historical periodization, it would be more appropriate to refer to the tumultuous period of the end of the Edo period and the Meiji Restoration, which began with the arrival of Commodore Perry in 1853 (Kaei 6), to the time of the Taishō Political Crisis, which occurred after the death of Emperor Meiji and symbolized the rise of a new era.
