Japanese: セント･ヘレンズ[山]（英語表記）Saint Helens

A large active volcano in southern Washington State, USA. It has been erupting actively for the past several thousand years, and is a beautiful stratovolcano of Mt. Fuji type composed of basalt, andesite, and dacite rocks, with an elevation of 2,975 m. The most recent eruption began in 1980, when a magnitude 5 earthquake occurred in May, causing a major collapse of the summit, followed by the eruption of pumice and volcanic ash. As a result, the northern half of the summit was lost and the summit was lowered by 350 m. More than 70 people were killed, a vast coniferous forest was destroyed by the blast, and debris flows filled the valleys and caused floods.

アメリカ，ワシントン州南部にある大型の活火山。過去数千年間活発に噴火し，標高2975mの秀麗な富士山型の玄武岩，安山岩，デイサイト質の岩石からなる成層火山であった。最近の噴火は1980年に始まったが，5月にマグニチュード5の地震が発生し，山頂部が大崩壊し，ひきつづいて軽石，火山灰が噴出した。この結果，山頂の北半分が失われ，山頂は350m低くなった。死者は70人以上，広大な針葉樹林は爆風でなぎ倒され，岩屑流は谷を埋め，洪水を生じた。
