...When peasants borrowed land or money or grain from landlords due to land shortages, economic hardship, or heavy tax burdens, they often used otrabotka to pay the high rent and repayments with high interest. There were many different forms, such as contracted cultivation with tools and livestock (in this case, the remuneration was per contracted area) or simple day labor, but one well-known example was otrabotka, where peasants contracted all the work from plowing to harvesting on an allotted plot of land on a landlord's directly managed farm that was twice the size of the rented land, and used the remuneration for their labor to pay the rent. This appears to be similar to feudal corvée (labor rent), and it was seen as a typical example of the otrabotka system, and Lenin said that the otrabotka system was a direct relic of the corvée economy, but this view is one-sided.
