A thin silk fabric dyed with crimson, it was used mainly for the lining of kosode (short sleeves). In Japan, there has long been a custom of using things dyed with crimson for undergarments and linings. This probably stems from a belief in the medicinal properties of crimson, but because of this there was a huge demand for crimson silk, which must have accounted for a significant portion of crimson dyeing. Usually, it was dyed yellow with turmeric, then crimson was applied on top to create the so-called maple-leaf scarlet color. Since the Meiji period, chemical dyes have been used mainly to replace crimson silk dyed with real crimson, but in recent times crimson silk has been used for linings only in very special ceremonial wear, and so its uses have become increasingly limited.
