The area is located on the southwest coast of the Jutland Peninsula, between the Elbe and Eider rivers. It is the western coast of the present-day state of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany. Dietmarschen was separated from the German mainland by marshes and was geographically independent, but it also had a different political and state history from the rest of Germany. It had already converted to Christianity under the Carolingian dynasty through the preaching of the Archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen and was incorporated into the empire as a county, but its rule was not complete and the inhabitants resisted, so the area remained largely independent until the end of the Middle Ages.
