The Kishi Rebellion

Japanese: 癸巳の乱 - きしのらん

...a military official of the Goryeo Dynasty in Korea and the founder of the military government. A native of Haeju, Hwanghae Province. He started out as a soldier, and was promoted to the position of Supreme General during the reign of King Uijong due to his bravery. At the time, military officials were despised by civil officials and were growing dissatisfied. In 1170, when King Uijong went on a trip to the suburbs, he was on guard duty, but he conspired with the military officials who accompanied him, Yi Uibang and Yi Go, and suddenly attacked the king's party, killing the civil officials who were accompanying him. He then ran back to the royal palace and incited the soldiers, who were suffering from financial difficulties, to rise up in revolt, killing and exiling many civil officials (the Koin Rebellion). ...

…Such discontent grew, and in 1170 military officials such as Jeong Jung-bu, Yi Ui-bang, and Yi Gao staged a coup d'état, inciting soldiers to revolt, killing and exiling many civil officials, and seizing control of the government in one fell swoop (the Gyeongin Rebellion). Then, in 1173, Kim Bo-dang, the Northeast Military Commander, raised an opposing army, and they suppressed it, but also killed and exiled civil officials (the Kisi Rebellion). These two rebellions are called the Gyeonggi Rebellion, and with this the power of the civil officials was lost. …
