An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Satyridae (illustration). It is similar to the Japanese bush-tailed butterflies, but is paler in color, with a light-colored band in the center of the underside that is yellowish-white, and does not have the purple tinge of the Japanese bush-tailed butterflies. It spans 4.5-5.7cm. It is found from Assam and Myanmar to China, Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan, and in Japan it ranges from the southern tip of Hokkaido through Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Yakushima. It is not found in the Ryukyu Islands, where it is replaced by the same genus, the Ryukyu bush-tailed butterflies. It is commonly seen around woodlands and in grass along rivers, and often occurs in rice paddies. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
