Sado Shichidayu - Sado Shichidayu

Japanese: 佐渡七太夫 - さど・しちたゆう

Years of birth: Years of birth and death unknown. A sekkyobushi narrator from the early Edo period. Active from 1648 onwards. Apparently first based in Osaka, he performed in Edo in 1661, and thereafter became known as the Osaka Shichidayu-za, alongside the Tenma Hachidayu-za. Sekkyobushi is a Buddhist sermon told in a plaintive style with a mournful melody, and gradually became a popular form of entertainment, and in the Edo period he began to perform puppet plays with the shamisen. Shichidayu's narration is centred around the five sekkyo, such as "Shintokumaru" and "Sanshodayu".

江戸前期の説経節の太夫。正保5(1648)年以降活躍。はじめは大坂にいたらしいが,寛文1(1661)年には江戸で興行,その後は天満八太夫座とならんで大坂七太夫座として知られた。説経節は仏教の説教内容が哀調をおびた節をつけて平俗に語られたもので,次第に大衆芸能化し,江戸に入ると三味線をとり入れて操り芝居を興行するようになった。七太夫の語り物は「しんとく丸」「さんせう太夫」などの五説経を中心としている。
