San Antonio
A commercial and industrial city in southern Texas, USA. Population 999,000 (1994). Facing the San Antonio River, it is the commercial and financial center of the surrounding agricultural region. Industries include food processing, aircraft, building materials, chemical products, woodworking products, clothing, and machinery. There are also military facilities such as an air force base both in and around the city. The town was founded on the foundations of the mission church San Antonio de Valero and Fort San Antonio de Valero, both built in 1718. It is known as the site of the Alamo, where in 1836, over 180 men seeking Texas independence from Mexico fought against about 5,000 Mexican troops and were killed.

アメリカ合衆国テキサス州南部の商工業都市。人口99万9000(1994)。サン・アントニオ川に面し,周囲の農業地帯の商業・金融の中心地。食品加工,航空機,建築用資材,化学製品,木工製品,衣類,機械などの工業もある。また,市の内外には空軍基地などの軍事施設が設けられている。1718年に建設された伝道教会サン・アントニオ・デ・バレロとサン・アントニオ・デ・ベーハル砦が基礎となって町が建設された。1836年,メキシコからのテキサス独立を志した180余名が,約5000人のメキシコ軍を相手に戦い,全員玉砕したアラモ砦の所在地として知られている。
