A commercial and industrial city in southern Texas, USA. Population 999,000 (1994). Facing the San Antonio River, it is the commercial and financial center of the surrounding agricultural region. Industries include food processing, aircraft, building materials, chemical products, woodworking products, clothing, and machinery. There are also military facilities such as an air force base both in and around the city. The town was founded on the foundations of the mission church San Antonio de Valero and Fort San Antonio de Valero, both built in 1718. It is known as the site of the Alamo, where in 1836, over 180 men seeking Texas independence from Mexico fought against about 5,000 Mexican troops and were killed.
