A medieval samurai family in Shimotsuke. They were the first line of the Hatta clan, a powerful vassal of the Kamakura Shogunate and hereditary governor of Hitachi Province. In 1192 (Kenkyu 3), Hatta Tomoie was appointed land steward of Mogi-go in Shimotsuke, and his third son, Tomomoto, moved to Mogi, changed his surname to Mogi, and became the first head of the family. The Mogi clan's base of control over the area was Mogi Castle (Kikyo Castle). Due to their military achievements in the Jokyu War, they obtained the position of land steward of Kata-sho in Kii. During the Nanboku-cho period, they consistently sided with the Ashikaga clan and fought in various places. During this time, Mogi Castle was burned down in attacks by the Southern Court, and Mogi-sho was seized by nearby local lords, but they managed to hold on to their territory.
