1378‐1446 Italian humanist educator. Born in northern Italy. He went to Padua, which was the second largest center of classical studies after Florence and where the influence of Petrarch still lingered at the time. He entered the University of Padua in 1396 and studied liberal arts under humanists such as Bergerio and Barzizza. After obtaining his doctorate, he taught grammar and mathematics privately. In 1415, he also established a close friendship with Guarino da Verona in Venice. In 1422, he became professor of rhetoric at the University of Padua. The following year, he left his position and opened a school in Venice, but was invited by the Gonzaga family to open a boarding school in Mantua called "Giocosa" (House of Joy), where he remained until his death.
