Safaniya‐Khafji Oil Field - Safaniya‐Khafji Oil Field
An oil field in Saudi Arabia located in the northwest of the Persian Gulf, off the coast of Saudi Arabia and the former Neutral Zone. It is the world's largest offshore oil field, stretching 65 km in length and 18 km at its widest point. Its recoverable reserves are estimated at 39 billion barrels, making it the fourth largest in the world, including onshore oil fields. Both fields are located on a series of anticlines, with the Safaniyah field discovered by ARAMCO in 1951 and the Khafji field discovered by Arabian Oil Co. in 1959. The oil layer is made of sandstone and limestone belonging to the middle to lower Cretaceous period at a depth of about 1,500 m.
