...In particular, when Mongke became the Great Khan in 1251, he killed or exiled almost all of the adult males of the Chagatai family, including Is Mongke, who opposed his accession to the throne. As a result, the Chagatai Ulus was temporarily destroyed and its territory was divided between the Great Khan and the Kipchak Khanate. However, after Mongke's death in 59, two civil wars broke out in succession, the Ariq Buqa Rebellion (1259-64) and the Haidu Rebellion (1266-1304), over the succession of the Great Khan. Taking advantage of the confusion, the Chagatai Khans Alghu, Barakh, and Dua (?-1306) gradually eliminated the suzerainty of the Mongol kings, including the Great Khan, over the Chagatai family and their control over Central Asia. In 1306, when these civil wars finally ended, Duwa annexed the former territory of the Ogedei Ulus, and thus achieved the independence of the Chagatai Khanate for the first time. Around this time, the royal family began to settle down and become Islamized, and Duwa's son Kebek and his brother Tarmashirin began to live semi-settled lives in the oases of Western Turkestan.
