A perennial vine of the mint family. It is hardy and its vines can grow even over hedges, hence the name.
It is also called "rensenso" (coin plant) because the shape of its leaves resembles old coins.
○ Herbal medicine effects: In Western folk medicine, drinking tea made from it with honey and sugar is said to be good for colds and coughs, and is also said to be effective against irritation in children.
Kakidooshi contains a lot of vitamin C, and also contains ingredients such as potassium nitrate that have a blood sugar lowering effect, so it is said to be effective against diabetes. In this case, dried kakidooshi is used. As a folk remedy, it is said to be good to prepare 10g each of kakidooshi and pearl barley , boil it in half with 600cc of water, and drink it warm on an empty stomach three times a day.
To reduce swelling caused by kidney disease , boil 15g of Kakidooshi in 600cc of water until it is reduced to half its original volume, then drink it warm three times a day on an empty stomach. It is said to stimulate urination and reduce swelling.
External use: Cutting fresh leaves and grinding them in a mortar is effective for purulent boils . The juice from the leaves during the flowering period is also effective against athlete's foot. It is said that applying the juice to the affected area several times a day for more than a week will relieve the itching.
The raw root is also effective for stiff shoulders. Wash the root thoroughly, grate it, mix it with flour, spread it on a cloth and apply it to the affected area.

 シソ科の蔓性(つるせい)多年草。生命力が強く、蔓が垣根を越えても生えてくるので、この名がつきました。
 葉の形が古銭に似ているため、連銭草(れんせんそう)とも呼ばれます。
○漢方的な働き
 西欧の民間療法では、はちみつや砂糖と合わせてお茶として飲むとかぜやせきによいとされ、子どものかんの虫にも効くといわれています。
 カキドオシはビタミンCを多く含んでおり、そのうえ、硝酸(しょうさん)カリなど血糖降下作用をもつ成分が含まれているので、糖尿病に有効とされています。この場合、乾物のカキドオシを用います。民間療法としては、カキドオシとハトムギの実を各10g用意し、600ccの水で2分の1に煎(せん)じ、1日3回にわけて空腹時にあたためて飲むとよいとされています。
 腎臓病(じんぞうびょう)によるむくみをとるには、カキドオシ15gを600ccの水で2分の1になるまで煎じて1日3回にわけて空腹時にあたためて飲みます。排尿をうながし、むくみがとれるといわれています。
○外用としての利用法
 また、生葉を刈り取ってすり鉢ですったものは、化膿性(かのうせい)のできものに有効です。開花期の葉の汁は、水虫にも効果的。汁を患部に1日数回塗り、1週間以上続けるとかゆみがとれてくるといわれています。
 生の根の部分は肩こりにも効果があります。根をよく洗い、すりおろして小麦粉で練り、布にのばして患部に貼(は)ります。
