…Passion music, which had existed since the Middle Ages, also reached unparalleled heights in the Baroque period by absorbing the compositional style of the oratorio (JS Bach). Although songs generally had a basso continuo (Heinrich Albert (1604-51), Adam Krieger (1634-66), and others), they did not reach the heights of artistic expression reached after the Classical period. Instead, the semi-dramatic form of the cantata produced excellent results in both the secular cantata (A. Scarlatti) and the church cantata (JS Bach). Of all instrumental forms, the so-called "Baroque sonata" form is particularly important (sonata). …
