Located in the Damodar River basin, which flows east-west through the southern part of the state of Bihar, India, this is India's largest coalfield. The coal-bearing seams are intercalated in the Permian period and there are more than 20 coal seams. They are over 1.2m thick, totaling more than 70m. High-quality caking coal is mainly produced from the upper coal seams, but most is general coal. There are also natural coke portions that have been thermally transformed by the intrusion of igneous rocks. The reserves are said to be over 10 billion tons.
