Located in the Damodar River basin, which flows east-west through the southern part of the state of Bihar, India, this is India's largest coalfield. The coal-bearing seams are intercalated in the Permian period and there are more than 20 coal seams. They are over 1.2m thick, totaling more than 70m. High-quality caking coal is mainly produced from the upper coal seams, but most is general coal. There are also natural coke portions that have been thermally transformed by the intrusion of igneous rocks. The reserves are said to be over 10 billion tons. [Ohashi Shusaku]

インド，ビハール州の南部を東西に流れるダモーダル川流域にあるインド最大の炭田。夾炭層は二畳紀に介在し炭層は20枚以上。厚さは1.2m以上で総計すれば70m以上に達する。良質の粘結炭は主として上位の炭層から産出するが，普通は一般炭である。また火成岩の逬入（へいにゆう）による熱変成を受け天然コークスの部分もみられる。埋蔵量は100億t以上といわれる。【大橋脩作】
