Also called bleaching powder or chlorine. It is a white powder whose active ingredient is calcium hypochlorite, and dissolves well in alcohol and water. It has a pungent odor similar to chlorine, and has a strong oxidative bleaching effect along with sodium hypochlorite and sodium chlorite. For this reason, bleaching powder is generally used as a bleaching agent and disinfectant. The main component of bleaching powder is Ca(OCl) 2 ·CaCl 2 ·2H 2 O, and the amount of available chlorine that performs the oxidative effect of this pure substance is 48.9%, but actual industrial products contain a solid solution of Ca(OCl) 2 , CaCl 2 , Ca(ClO 3 ) 2 , and H 2 O, as well as slaked lime, so the amount of available chlorine is 33-38%, and the Japanese Pharmacopoeia, food additives, and JIS Class 1 specify that it must contain more than 30%.
