Fisheries Research Station

Japanese:
Fisheries Research Station

It can refer to the Fisheries Research Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (1929-49), the predecessor of the National Fisheries Research Institute (which became an independent administrative institution in 2001), but it usually refers to the fisheries research institute of a prefecture.

Starting with the establishment of the Aichi Prefectural Fisheries Experimental Station in 1894 (Meiji 27), most prefectures were established in the 1890s, and as of 2001 (Heisei 13), all prefectures except Nara Prefecture have established fisheries experimental stations for marine and inland waters (although today they are not necessarily called "fisheries experimental stations"). In addition to conducting research on resources, oceans, water quality conservation, fishing gear and fishing methods, manufacturing and processing, they also disseminate new technologies to fishermen and processors and provide guidance on technical improvements. Although they mainly deal with matters within the prefecture, they also work with the Fisheries Research Institute to tackle wide-area issues that go beyond the prefectures, such as resource surveys, fishing conditions, and surveys and predictions of ocean conditions.
