…Modulations are often used when there is no change in the tonic tone, such as between the same key (e.g., C major and C minor), but strictly speaking, this is merely a change in mode (major and minor), and would be better called a transposition. Until the end of the 18th century, the range of new keys resulting from modulations was mainly close to the tonic tone (close modulations), but in the 19th century, as expressive needs became more diverse, keys far removed from the tonic tone came to be used freely (distant modulations). The role of modulations also changed from the contrast effect in musical structure in Baroque and Classical music (for example, the contrast between the first theme in the tonic tone and the second theme in the dominant tone in a sonata form exposition) to the diversification of subtle emotional nuances and color effects in Romantic music. …
