...Apart from literature, economic anthropology, a critique of economics, has shown remarkable development under the influence of cultural anthropology, giving rise to new ideas of exchange and consumption, a complete departure from the traditional production-centered economic thought. The idea of consumption as a symbol by the French Jean Baudrillard (1929-) is one of the pinnacles of this. In the Soviet Union, the birthplace of Russian Formalism, the source of structuralism, cultural semiotics was launched early after Stalin's death by reinterpreting the poetic language theory of Russian Formalism and Bakhtin's literary studies, as well as the ideas of dialogue and exchange, using concepts from structural linguistics, information theory, and cybernetics.
