Flourens - Marie Jean Pierre Flourens

Japanese: フルーランス - ふるーらんす(英語表記)Marie Jean Pierre Flourens
Flourens - Marie Jean Pierre Flourens

French physiologist. Born in Maureillan. Elected member of the Academie des Sciences in 1828, and professor of comparative anatomy at the Jardin des Plantes (the predecessor of the Musée National des Naturales) in Paris in 1830. Elected member of the Academie Française in 1840. Since his first paper in 1819, he has conducted experimental studies of nervous function, and demonstrated the significance of the cerebellum in relation to balance during walking and the equilibrium function of the semicircular canals. His research on the "nœud vital" (1858) became the basis for subsequent research on the location of the respiratory center. That is, he named the area around the medulla oblongata as the point of vitality because breathing stopped when the area was punctured. He died on December 6, 1867 in Montgolon near Paris.
