Born: November 10, 1901 in Aosta
[Died] April 11, 1990. Italian literary historian in Rome. Graduated from the Faculty of Literature at the University of Turin. Specialized in early Italian literature, and was a professor at the University of Palermo and the University of Rome. After World War II, he published Ritratto di Manzoni e altri saggi (1962) (Statue of Manzoni and Other Things) based on the theories of Gramsci and Marxism, shedding new light on the history of Italian literature from the perspective of social history. His main work was Compendio di storia della letteratura italiana (Outline of the History of Italian Literature) (3 volumes, 1947, revised in 1965), and the large-scale work Storia della letteratura italiana (History of Italian Literature) (9 volumes, 1963-70), which he supervised with E. Cecchi.
