A naval battle that took place in September 480 BC during the second expedition of the Persian Wars. After Xerxes I's army broke through the fortress at Thermopylae and burned Athens, they cornered the Greeks at the Isthmus and the nearby Gulf of Salamis, their last line of defense. Through a strategy by Themistocles of Athens, the naval battle's strategy leader, the Greek combined fleet lured the Persian Navy, which had superior manpower and equipment, into a narrow channel, where the small but maneuverable Greek warships attacked and defeated them. The Persian king, who was watching from a nearby coast, withdrew to Asia with part of his army. This naval battle decided the outcome of the war and solidified the position of the Athenian navy in Greece.
