A city in the Tendring district, northeastern tip of Essex County, eastern England, United Kingdom. It is a port city on the North Sea, about 60 km northeast of the county capital Chelmsford, at the tip of a promontory jutting into an estuary formed at the mouth of the Stour and Orwell rivers. It is an ancient battlefield where King Alfred the Great sank 16 Danish ships in the estuary in 885. In the 14th century, it flourished as a trading port for wool and wheat, and in the 17th century it became a shipbuilding center. During World War I it was an important naval port. It is one of the best ports on the east coast of England, with a water depth of about 5m at low tide, and is also important as a refuge port. Today it is a trading port mainly with northern European countries, and container transport is thriving. Passenger ships and mail ships also operate between the two areas. There are various light industries and fishing is also practiced. The Dovercourt coast in the southwest is a seaside resort. Population: 21,300 (2001).
