The capital of Sistan-Baluchistan Province in southeastern Iran. Population 419,518 (1996). It is a border town with Afghanistan and Pakistan, and is connected to Pakistan by a railway built by the British for their control of India. Most of the residents are Sunni Baluchi people, who speak the Baluchi language, an Iranian language.
