...A Portuguese tapestry from 1535 depicts the early form of the galleon, which is characterized by its elongated width, keel length, and deck length ratio of 1:3:4, and its low forecastle and stern tower, in comparison to the carracks that were in their heyday at the time. It is a fully rigged sailing ship without oars, but its low, elongated hull and long protruding ram (later to become a superstructure called a beakhead) retain the characteristics of a galley. Galleons are said to be the direct ancestors of sailing ships that continued into the 19th century, and have replaced carracks in European countries since the 1970s. They are ships that are less susceptible to wind drift and have greater speed.
