...A Portuguese tapestry from 1535 depicts the early form of the galleon, which is characterized by its elongated width, keel length, and deck length ratio of 1:3:4, and its low forecastle and stern tower, in comparison to the carracks that were in their heyday at the time. It is a fully rigged sailing ship without oars, but its low, elongated hull and long protruding ram (later to become a superstructure called a beakhead) retain the characteristics of a galley. Galleons are said to be the direct ancestors of sailing ships that continued into the 19th century, and have replaced carracks in European countries since the 1970s.
