...American space transportation rocket. The word "shuttle" originally referred to a loom's shuttle, which moves back and forth between threads, and so the name came to be used to describe a transportation vehicle that travels back and forth regularly and frequently. As can be seen from this, the Space Shuttle is different from conventional rockets in that it is a rocket that can travel back and forth between the Earth and space, and the Orbiter is a winged rocket vehicle like an airplane.
