A form of faith or religion based on magic, prophecy, healing, and rituals administered by shamans. From the viewpoint that the etymology of shaman can be traced back to the languages of the Tungusic peoples, it is often considered to be a primitive religion of Siberia, but similar phenomena can be found all over the world. Queen Himiko of Yamataikoku was a female shaman, and many founders of new religions since the early modern period have shamanic qualities. There are many examples throughout history, including prophets in biblical religions, of the activities of shamans who directly communicate with gods and spirits providing new guidance when existing religions or societies become rigid or fall into crisis.

シャーマンが司る呪術，予言，治病，祭儀などを根幹とする信仰・宗教の一形態。シャーマンの語源をツングース系諸族の言語に求める立場からは，シベリアの原始宗教とされることが多いが，類似の現象は世界各地に見られる。邪馬台国女王卑弥呼は女性シャーマン（巫）であったし，近世以降の新宗教の教祖にもシャーマン的資質の持ち主は少なくない。既成の宗教や社会が硬直化したり，危機に陥った場合，神霊・精霊と直接交流するシャーマンの活動が新しい指針を与えることは，聖書宗教における預言者をはじめ，史上多くの例がある。
