British civil engineer and naval architect. His father was MI Brunel (1769-1849), the inventor of the shield tunneling method and also famous for constructing the Thames underwater tunnel. He worked in his father's office and designed the Clifton Bridge, Hungerford Bridge, and other bridges. As chief engineer of the London-Bristol railway, he carried out the major construction work to change the gauge from narrow to broad.
