An industrial city in western New York State, United States. Population 62,000 (1990). Known as the tourist destination of Niagara Falls. Originally an Indian settlement, it became a French colony in the 1680s, a British colony in 1759, and a U.S. territory in 1805. At the end of the 19th century, a power station was built to harness the waterpower of the falls, and the electrometallurgical, electrochemical, chemical, and machinery industries were established here. In 1892, the villages of Niagara Falls and Suspension Bridge merged to form the city of Niagara Falls. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
