Japanese: アジ(鰺) - アジ

A fish of the Carangidae family. Commonly known as Japanese horse mackerel. It can reach 40 cm in length, with a blue or yellow-green back and a silvery-white belly. It has particularly large, thorny scales called "zengo" along its entire lateral line. It is found throughout Japan, the Korean peninsula, and Guangdong Province in China. It lives in the surface waters offshore until it reaches about 15 cm, after which it moves closer to the coast. It is widely fished and tastes good. There are many other important edible fish in the horse mackerel family, including the common horse mackerel, striped horse mackerel, and Japanese jack. The longfin jack is also beautiful.

アジ科の魚。一般にマアジをいう。全長40cmに達し，背面は青または黄緑を帯び，腹面は銀白色。側線全部に〈ぜんご〉（ぜいご）と呼ばれる特別に大きいとげっぽい鱗がある。日本全土，朝鮮半島，中国広東省に分布。15cmぐらいになるまで沖合表層で生活し，それ以後沿岸へ近づく。盛んに漁獲され，味もよい。そのほかアジ類には重要な食用魚が多く，ムロアジ，シマアジ，カイワリなどが著名。またイトヒキアジは美しい。
