Japanese: 靱猿 - うつぼざる

(1) The title of a Kyogen piece. Daimyo Kyogen. While out hunting with Tarokaja, the daimyo sees a well-furred monkey being led by Saruhiki and asks him to give it to him so that he can use its skin for making oarsmanship. When Saruhiki refuses, the daimyo threatens him with a bow and arrow, forcing him to agree. When Saruhiki raises his stick to kill the monkey, the innocent monkey takes the stick and pretends to row a boat, leaving the daimyo feeling sorry for him and unable to help it. The daimyo is also touched by the monkey's selflessness and saves its life. Saruhiki happily sings a monkey song and makes the monkey dance. The daimyo is in high spirits and plays with the monkey, pretending to dance, giving him a fan, a sword, and clothes as rewards.

(1)狂言の曲名。大名狂言。大名が太郎冠者をつれて狩りに出かける途中，猿引が連れている毛並みのよい猿を見て，靱の皮にしたいから猿を譲れという。猿引が断ると，大名は弓矢で脅し，むりに承知させる。猿引が猿を殺そうと杖をふりあげると，無邪気な猿はその杖を取って舟の櫓を漕ぐまねをするので，あわれを催し手がくだせない。大名も無心な猿の姿に心打たれ，命を助ける。猿引は喜んで猿歌をうたい猿に舞わせる。大名も上機嫌で猿にたわむれて舞うまねをし，扇や刀，衣服をほうびに与える。
