1757‐1815 British caricaturist. Born in London, he started out as a copperplate engraver. Later he studied at the Royal Academy, but was largely self-taught. He partnered with the publisher Lady Humphrey, under whose tutelage he produced most of his major works. He was driven insane by alcoholism and mental illness, which he suffered from from around 1811, and he committed suicide. He was one of the most ruthless and critical painters of his time, and his spirited, grotesque depictions were blatant satires of social and political figures such as Napoleon, the French Revolution, and the British royal family.
