James Gillray

1757‐1815
British caricaturist. Born in London, he started out as a copperplate engraver. Later he studied at the Royal Academy, but was largely self-taught. He partnered with the publisher Lady Humphrey, under whose tutelage he produced most of his major works. He was driven insane by alcoholism and mental illness, which he suffered from from around 1811, and he committed suicide. He was one of the most ruthless and critical painters of his time, and his spirited, grotesque depictions were blatant satires of social and political figures such as Napoleon, the French Revolution, and the British royal family.

イギリスの風刺画家。ロンドンに生まれ，銅版画家として出発。後にローヤル･アカデミーで学ぶが，独学に負うところが大きい。出版業者ハンフリー夫人と提携し，主要作品のほとんどを彼女のもとで制作。アルコール中毒と1811年ころから患った精神病で，狂気のうちに自殺。同時代の画家の中で最もしんらつで仮借のない批判精神をもち，気魄に満ちたグロテスクな描写で，ナポレオンやフランス革命，イギリス王室などの社会･政治的要人を露骨に風刺した。
