Igneous rocks that contain a high alkali content compared to other components. They usually do not contain silicate minerals such as quartz, but contain characteristic minerals such as sodalite, natrolite, and titanite. The amount of alkali in igneous rocks varies in relation to the amount of silicate _SiO2 , so the amount of alkali _Na2O + _K2O is used as the standard to compare. Alkaline rocks are divided into (1) those without feldspar (alkali basalt, trachystalite, trachyandesite, trachyte, alkali rhyolite, alkali gabbro, monzonite, syenite), (2) those with feldspar and feldspar (basanite, tephrite, phonolite, essexite, feldspar syenite), and (3) those with feldspar but without feldspar (nephelinite, leucite, xanthosite, jacuprangite, meltigite, ayolite, urtite). Minerals constituting alkaline rocks in (1) are plagioclase, potassium feldspar, anorthoclase, analcime, small amounts of silica minerals, olivine, clinopyroxene, alkali amphibole, biotite, iron ore, etc. Series (2) includes plagioclase, nepheline, leucite, analcime, noselite, hauyne, etc., and the mafic minerals are almost the same as in series (1). Series (3) does not include feldspar, but includes nepheline, leucite, analcime, noselite, hauyne, sodalite, kalsilite, and the same mafic minerals as in series (1) and phlogopite.

The prevailing theory is that the magma that formed alkaline rocks originates deeper in the mantle than tholeiitic magma. According to this theory, magma originates along the iso-deep earthquake surface, which deepens from the Pacific Ocean side to the Sea of ​​Japan side, and magma originates at a greater depth on the Sea of ​​Japan side and the continental side, so it is rich in alkali. There is also a theory that alkaline magma is formed from tholeiitic magma through processes such as differentiation and hybridization. In the East African Rift Valley, carbonate-based eruptions called carbonatite are associated with alkaline volcanic activity. Diamond-producing kimberlite in South Africa and Australia is a type of alkaline volcanic rock. Alkaline rocks are also abundant around the Mediterranean Sea. In Asia, they are found on Mount Paektu, the Gaema Plateau, Ulleung Island, and Jeju Island from Korea to China. In Japan, these include Hamada in Shimane Prefecture, Oga in Akita Prefecture, Atsumi in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, Oki in Shimane Prefecture, Iki and the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture, and Mount Ontake in Kiso, Nagano Prefecture. They are mainly found on the Sea of ​​Japan side, forming the Sea of ​​Japan Rim alkaline rock province.

他の成分に比べてアルカリ含有量が多い火成岩。通常、石英などのケイ酸鉱物を含まず、特徴的な鉱物としてソーダ輝石、ソーダ角閃(かくせん)石、チタン輝石を含んだりする。火成岩類のアルカリの量はケイ酸SiO₂の量と関連して変化しているので、ケイ酸の量を基準としてアルカリNa₂O＋K₂Oの含有量を比較する。アルカリ岩はケイ酸の過不足の程度によって、(1)准長石を含まない系列（アルカリ玄武岩、粗面玄武岩、粗面安山岩、粗面岩、アルカリ流紋岩、アルカリ斑糲(はんれい)岩、モンゾナイト、閃長岩）、(2)長石と准長石を含む系列（ベイサナイト、テフライト、フォノライト、エセックサイト、准長石閃長岩）、(3)准長石を含み長石を含まない系列（霞(かすみ)岩、白榴(はくりゅう)岩、黄長岩、ジャクピランジャイト、メルティジャイト、アイヨライト、ウルタイト）に分けられる。アルカリ岩の構成鉱物は、(1)の系列では、斜長石、カリ長石、アノーソクレース、方沸石(ほうふっせき)、少量のケイ酸鉱物、橄欖(かんらん)石、単斜輝石、アルカリ角閃石、黒雲母(うんも)、鉄鉱石など。(2)の系列では、斜長石、霞石、リューサイト、方沸石、ノゼライト、アウインなどで、苦鉄(くてつ)質鉱物は(1)とほぼ同じである。(3)の系列では、長石は含まれず、霞石、リューサイト、方沸石、ノゼライト、アウイン、ソーダライト、カルシライト、それに(1)とほぼ同じ苦鉄質鉱物と金雲母などである。

　アルカリ岩を形成したマグマは、ソレイアイト質マグマに比較して、マントルのより深い位置で発生するという考え方が有力である。この考え方によれば、太平洋側から日本海側に向かって深度を増す等深発地震面に沿ってマグマが発生し、日本海側、大陸側では深い位置でマグマが発生するため、アルカリに富むものになるとする。このほか、ソレイアイト質マグマからも分化作用、混成作用などの過程によってアルカリ質マグマが形成されるとする考え方もある。東アフリカ地溝帯ではカーボナタイトとよばれる炭酸塩を主体とする噴出物がアルカリ火山活動に伴っている。南アフリカやオーストラリアの、ダイヤモンドを産出するキンバーライトはアルカリ火山岩の一種である。アルカリ岩は地中海周辺にも多い。アジアでは朝鮮から中国にかけての白頭山、蓋馬(かいま)高原、それに鬱陵(うつりょう)島、済州島などでみられる。日本では島根県浜田、秋田県男鹿(おが)、山形県鶴岡(つるおか)市温海(あつみ)、島根県隠岐(おき)、長崎県の壱岐(いき)と五島列島、長野県木曽(きそ)の御嶽(おんたけ)山などがある。主として日本海側に分布し、環日本海アルカリ岩石区をつくっている。
