...The contributions of this school are wide-ranging, from phonology in the 1920s and 1930s, to structural aesthetics in the 1930s and 1940s, to semiotics in the 1940s and 1950s, and the "theme-rhema theory," which analyzes sentences in relation to extralinguistic reality, continued to develop from the 1930s to the 1980s. The first period of this school lasted until 1938, when the Czechoslovakia was occupied by the Nazis, and during this period the main contributions were seen in the domestic journal "Slovo a slovesnost" (language and literature) and the foreign journal "TCLP (Travaux du cercle linguistique de Prague)." The school itself was reorganized into the Czechoslovak Academy in 1952, but the traditions of the school, which started as a circle, were carried on by the second-term members Vladimír Skalička, J. Vachek, and K. Horálek, and showed no less prosperity than in the first term with typology, stylistics, central-peripheral-area theory, and theme-rhema theory. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Travaux du cercle linguistique de Prague" are listed below.
