Lantern moss - Lantern moss

Japanese:
Lantern moss - Lantern moss

A general term for species of moss plants in the family Leucanthemum. Often found in moist places in partial shade, the stems are erect or horizontal, and the leaves have a distinct midrib. They may be monoecious or heteroecious. The capsules are oval or cylindrical, and hang down from the stalk, so the Japanese name was given to them as they resemble a paper lantern. There are about 30 species in 7 genera in Japan.

Plagiomnium trichomanes has creeping and erect stems, with reproductive organs at the end of the erect stems. The creeping stems end above ground, where new shoots grow. The leaves are broad and oval. It is found in moist places and is often used in moss gardens. Plagiomnium succulentum is similar to Plagiomnium trichomanes, but its leaves are larger and darker green. Mnium laevinerve has erect stems and oval or ovate-lanceolate leaves. The edges have sharp teeth. Trachycystis flagellare has only erect stems, is 2-3 cm tall, has many long, slender gemma buds at the ends of its stems, and has lanceolate leaves.
