Okinoshima is an island in the Genkai Sea that belongs to Munakata City in northern Fukuoka Prefecture, and is located in the sea northwest of Oshima. It is also written as Okishima. The entire island is composed of basalt, and sea cliffs have developed on the coast. There are no permanent residents, but since the nearby sea is a fishing ground for sea bream and other fish, fishermen stay here in temporary huts during the peak season. In 1962, the island was completed as a refuge port for a fourth-class fishing port. Three academic surveys have been carried out since 1954, and earthenware, metalware, and ritual items from the 4th to 9th centuries have been discovered, revealing the island's role in ancient transportation with the continent (see Okinoshima ruins). The entire island belongs to the sacred grounds of Okitsumiya Shrine, a Munakata Shrine that is deeply revered by fishermen, and women are prohibited from entering the island. In 2017, the entire island of Okinoshima and the three surrounding reefs, Koyajima, Mikadobashira, and Tengu Rock, were registered as a cultural World Heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as "Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region, the Sacred Island." The virgin forest that covers the entire island is the northernmost limit of subtropical plants and has been designated a national natural monument. The area is 0.69 km2 . The circumference is approximately 4 km.Okinoshima IslandSource: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
