High-energy charged particles generate many electron-hole pairs in semiconductors such as silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge). Radiation detectors are designed to collect these electrons and holes at the anode and cathode, respectively, and output the electrical signal generated at that time to an external electronic circuit. A strong electric field is required so that the electron-hole pairs generated by the incidence of charged particles are collected by the electrodes without recombining and being lost. The area called the sensitive region, which is located between the two electrodes of the detector, has high electrical resistance, which creates a strong electric field.

高エネルギーの荷電粒子は，シリコンSi，ゲルマニウムGeなどの半導体の中で多くの電子と正孔(ホール)との対を生成する。これらの電子と正孔をそれぞれ陽極と陰極に集めて，その際に生ずる電気信号を外部の電子回路にとり出すようにつくられた放射線検出器である。荷電粒子の入射によって生じた電子と正孔との対が，再結合を起こして消失することなく電極に収集されるためには，強い電界が必要である。検出器の両電極の間にある有感領域と呼ばれる領域は高い電気抵抗をもっており，そのため強い電界が生じている。
