Sasa Narimasa - Sasa Narimasa

Japanese: 佐々成政 - さっさ・なりまさ
Sasa Narimasa - Sasa Narimasa
Year of death: Tensho 16, leap year 5, 14 (July 7, 1588)
Year of birth: Tenbun 5 (1536)
A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Some say he was born in Tenbun 8 (1539). He was the fifth son of Shigemune (Morimasa). He was commonly known as Yozaemon, Kuranosuke, and Mutsu no Kami. He was from Owari Province (Aichi Prefecture) and served Oda Nobunaga. He distinguished himself in battles such as the Battle of Inoue, where Nobunaga attacked his younger brother Nobuyuki, the Battle of Okehazama, and the Mino Strategy, and in 1567 he became the leader of the Kuro-Moi-shu. In 1573 (Tensho 1), he led the vanguard in the attack on Asakura Yoshikage, and in May of the same year he led the musketeers at the Battle of Nagashino. In August of the same year, he was awarded the two upper districts of Fuchu, Echizen, for his achievement in putting down the Echizen Ikko Ikki uprising. In 1575 he entered Etchu and based himself in Moriyama Castle. The following year, he was given 30,000 koku in the Etchu Shinkawa and Tonami districts, and in 1576 he expelled Jinbo Nagazumi and entered Toyama Castle, ruling the entire Etchu province. At that time, he was a vassal of Shibata Katsuie in Echizen, and after the Honnoji Incident he sided with the anti-Toyotomi Hideyoshi camp, but surrendered to Hideyoshi after the Battle of Shizugatake in 1618. Hideyoshi granted him the entire province of Etchu, and in December of the same year he was appointed as Mutsu no Kami (Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade). However, he soon became close to Oda Nobuo and Tokugawa Ieyasu, and during the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute in 1619, he famously traveled from Toyama to Hamamatsu, crossing the Tateyama mountain range and the Sarasara Pass, to meet Ieyasu, dissatisfied with the peace agreement with Hideyoshi. After that, in August of the same year, he surrendered and swore allegiance to Hideyoshi when he was attacked by him. In 1619 he was appointed as a chamberlain (Junior Fourth Rank, Lower Grade). In 1620 he participated in Hideyoshi's invasion of Kyushu, and after the war he was given the entire province of Higo, and entered Uto Castle, then Kumamoto Castle, but he was accused of mismanagement during a revolt by local lords, and the following year he committed seppuku in Amagasaki, Settsu. <References> Kazuko Endo, "Sassa Narimasa"
