Takeshi Osatake

Judicial officer and historian. Born on January 20, 1881, as the eldest son of Osa Take Tamotsu, a Kanazawa feudal samurai and Chinese scholar. After graduating from Meiji Law School (the predecessor to Meiji University) in 1899 (Meiji 32), he served as a judge in the Tokyo, Fukui, and Nagoya district courts, before becoming a judge at the Tokyo Court of Appeals in 1918 (Taisho 7) and a judge at the Supreme Court in 1921. He retired in December 1942 (Showa 17) to make way for his successors. He began researching Meiji history while he was a district court judge, and published research on Meiji cultural history, legal history, and constitutional history in the Chuo Horitsu Shinpo and Hogaku Shirin magazines, among others. His work on "Constitutional Thought Before and After the Meiji Restoration" was highly praised, and he became a doctor of law. In 1921, he founded the Meiji Culture Research Society together with Yoshino Sakuzo, Miyatake Gaikotsu, Ono Hideo, and others, and edited and published the 24-volume Meiji Culture Collection, making a great contribution to research on Meiji history. He established a style of academic study based on strict historical research, and wrote many books, including "Outline of Meiji Constitutional History" (1938) and "Research on Meiji Constitutional History" (1943). He passed away on October 1, 1946.

司法官、歴史家。明治13年1月20日、金沢藩士で漢学者の尾佐竹保の長男として生まれる。1899年(明治32)明治法律学校(明治大学の前身)を卒業後、東京、福井、名古屋の各地方裁判所判事を経て、1918年(大正7)東京控訴院判事、24年大審院判事となる。42年(昭和17)12月、後進に道を譲って退官した。地裁判事のころから明治史の研究を始め、『中央法律新報』『法学志林』などに明治文化史、法制史、憲政史などに関する研究を発表し、とくに「維新前後における立憲思想」は高い評価を得て、法学博士となる。24年吉野作造、宮武外骨(みやたけがいこつ)、小野秀雄(ひでお)らとともに明治文化研究会を設立、『明治文化全集』24巻を編集刊行して、明治史研究に大きな功績を残した。自らも厳密な考証に基づく文献主義的学風を確立して、前記著書のほか『明治憲政史大綱』(1938)、『明治憲政史の研究』(1943)をはじめ多くの著書を残した。昭和21年10月1日没。
