A folded mountain range in the western part of Akita Prefecture. It occupies the central part of the Dewa Mountains, and is bordered in the north by the Yoneshiro River with the Shirakami Mountains, and in the south by the Omono River with the Sasamori Hills. In addition to the main peak, Mt. Taihei (1,170 meters), there are a series of mountains over 1,000 meters high, including Mt. Babame (1,037 meters), Mt. Sasamori (1,026 meters), Misomori (969 meters), and Mt. Tsurugidake (1,032 meters). This is a mountain range that was uplifted in its prime, and is mainly made of Tertiary green tuff, with basalt and andesite exposed in some areas, and some parts covered with metamorphosed granite. The Asahi River, Sannai River, Babame River, and other rivers originate from this mountain range, and the erosion caused by these rivers is so severe that waterfalls and gorges can be seen in various places. There are scenic spots such as Soya Gorge and Komata River Valley, which are part of the Taihei-san Prefectural Natural Park. The mountain range is also home to many beautiful forests of beech and Akita cedar, and on the western foot of the mountain is Nibetsu National Forest and the Taihei-san Ski Resort.
