Serapion Brothers (English spelling: Serapion brothers)

Serapion Brothers (English spelling: Serapion brothers)

A group of Russian writers during the Soviet era. Founded in 1921 in Petrograd (St. Petersburg), it was named after the work of E. T. A. Hoffman. Its members were Vsevolod Ivanov, Veniamin Kaberin, Ilya Gruzhjev, Mikhail Slonimsky, Mikhail Zoshchenko, Nikolai Tikhonov, Nikolai Nikitin, Konstantin Fedin, Vladimir Pozner, Elizaveta Polonskaya, and Lev Luntz, all of whom were young writers in their teens and twenties at the time. Influenced by so-called formalist theorists such as Shklovsky and Tynyanov, as well as the writer Zamyatin, they showed a strong interest in experimenting with literary form. In the Soviet period immediately after the revolution, they were classified as apolitical so-called companions, but they did not have a clear platform and their styles were diverse. What united the "brothers" was their youthful passion for creation and their belief in the autonomy of art. They published a joint book, "Collected Writings of the Serapion Brothers" (1922, Petrograd and Berlin).
