Politician. Born in Miyagi Prefecture. After graduating from high school, he worked as a charcoal burner while participating in political movements. He later moved to Tokyo and graduated from Nihon University's Politics Department in 1928 (Showa 3). He returned to Miyagi Prefecture in 1930, and served as Secretary General of the Prefectural Federation of All Japan Agricultural Cooperative Associations, among other positions, before becoming a member of the Sendai City Council in 1937. In 1938, he was imprisoned in the People's Front Incident. After World War II, he served as chairman of the Prefectural Federation of the General Federation of Federations of Japan Agricultural Cooperative Associations and also participated in the formation of the Socialist Party. He was elected to the House of Representatives (Miyagi 1st District) in 1947 (Showa 22), and has been elected several times since then. After the party split in 1951, he joined the left-wing Socialist Party. After the party unified in 1955, he served as election campaign committee chairman and party general affairs director, and was made vice-chairman of the party in 1964. He led the Sasaki faction and was the leader of the left wing of the party. He served as party chairman from 1965 to 1967, and later became a party adviser.
