A policy-making body in the Yi Dynasty of Korea. It was run by a council of senior officials such as the Uijeongbu Council, the Six Commissioners, and the Generals of the Two Bureaus. Its predecessor was the Chibyonji Saesang, which was established in the 15th century. It was originally established temporarily in 1510 as an organization for planning defenses in border areas during the Sanpo Rebellion, and was made permanent in 1554. It played an important role during the invasion by Toyotomi Hideyoshi's army (1592-98), and in the 17th century it usurped the authority of Uijeongbu Council and became the nation's highest policy-making body. In 1865, during the reign of Daewongun, it was downgraded to an organization of Uijeongbu Council, and was abolished in 1892. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
