A former town in Sakai District, Fukui Prefecture, occupying the northern part of the Fukui Plain. Awara, the center of the town where the Echizen Railway runs, has developed as a hot spring town. Salt springs. 40-70°C. The area is open to rice paddies, and vegetables, tobacco leaves, and pears are also grown. Awara ware is a specialty. Lake Kitagata is located in the northeast.
