A city in the northern part of Valencia Province, Valencia Region, eastern Spain. It is located about 25 km north-northeast of the provincial capital, Valencia. It was founded by immigrants from the ancient Greek island of Zacynthus, and was called Saguntum for a long time. In 214 BC, Rome recaptured the city, and its citizens were granted Roman citizenship. It was occupied by the Moors in the 8th century, and returned to Christian hands in the 13th century. Theaters from the times of Emperors Severus and Caracalla still remain. The main industry is light industry, and fruit and ores are exported from the port.
