As a result of the differentiation and development of furniture in the 17th century, when desks dedicated to writing became available during the reign of Louis XIV, the word came to mean a desk or writing table itself. The usual style was a long, horizontal board on four legs with a drawer at the bottom, which was popular in France in the late 17th century.
