…A desk or writing table. The word bureau comes from the thick, coarse woolen cloth (bure) that was used to cover writing tables and chests. As a result of the differentiation and development of furniture in the 17th century, when desks dedicated to writing became available during the reign of Louis XIV, the word came to mean a desk or writing table itself. The usual style was a long, horizontal board on four legs with a drawer at the bottom, which was popular in France in the late 17th century. A desk with spiral-shaped legs and three drawers on each side, decorated with AC boule inlay, was called a bureau Mazarin, and a small one a writing table à écrire.

…事務机または書きものテーブルのこと。ビューローの語は書きものをするテーブルやチェスト(櫃)の上にかけた，厚手の粗い毛織物(ビュールbure)に由来し，17世紀の家具の分化と発達の結果，ルイ14世時代に書きもの専用の机ができるようになってから，事務机または書きものテーブルそのものの名称となった。四脚の上に横長の甲板をのせ，その下部に引出しをつけたものが普通の形式で，17世紀後期のフランスで流行した。先が渦巻形の脚と左右の袖に三つの引出しをつけ，〈ブール象嵌〉(A.C.ブール)で飾った机は〈ビューロー･マザランbureau Mazarin〉，小型のものは〈書きものテーブルbureau à écrire〉などと呼ばれた。…
