Uguru Island

An island at the mouth of Sukumo Bay, in the southwestern tip of Kochi Prefecture. It is a small island with an area of ​​1.31 square kilometers, and is home to 32 households and 58 residents (2009). During the feudal era, it was part of the Uwajima Domain, but was transferred to Kochi Prefecture on July 7, 1874 (Meiji 7). It then became part of Okinoshima Village, Hata County, and was incorporated into Sukumo City in 1954 (Showa 29). Ukurushima, the only settlement on the island, is located in the southeast to avoid the winter monsoons. It is not blessed with flat land, so fishing is the main activity. Sardine fishing was once popular around Sukumo Bay, but it has declined. There is a ferry from Katajima in Sukumo City twice a day, but it still has a strong remote island character. The Ukurushima Lighthouse was built in the northeast in 1989 (Heisei 1). Many people visit for rock fishing. It belongs to Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park.

高知県南西端、宿毛(すくも)湾口にある島。面積1.31平方キロメートルの小島で、32世帯、58人（2009）の住民が居住する。藩政時代には宇和島藩領であったが、1874年（明治7）7月7日高知県に移管され、その後、幡多(はた)郡沖ノ島村に属し、1954年（昭和29）宿毛市に編入された。島の唯一の集落の鵜来島は冬の季節風を避ける南東部にある。平地に恵まれず、漁業が主。かつては宿毛湾付近のイワシ漁業が盛んであったが、衰退した。宿毛市片島から日に2便の連絡船があるが、離島的性格が強い。1989年（平成1）北東部に鵜来島灯台がつくられた。磯釣りに訪れる人も多い。足摺(あしずり)宇和海国立公園に属する。
