Basidiomycete fungi, order Acarinales, family Boletaceae. Grows above ground in forests in summer and autumn. Cap 3-12cm long, initially hemispherical, then flattened into a bun shape. Covered with purple-brown or black scales, underside white when young, covered with a membrane that turns blackish brown when ripe. Thick white flesh turns red on contact with air, then black. No folds, relatively large, with polygonal pores. Spore print black. Stem 5-15cm tall, 5-15mm in diameter. Blackish brown, covered with fibrous hairs. Found in Hokkaido, Honshu, and Kyushu, and also distributed in North America and Europe.

担子菌類マツタケ目オニイグチ科。夏秋の頃,林地の地上に生える。傘は3~12cm,初め半球形,のち平らなまんじゅう形になる。表面は紫褐色または黒色の鱗片におおわれ,下面は若いうちは白く,熟すると黒褐色になる膜におおわれている。肉は厚く白いが空気に触れると赤変し,のちに黒変する。ひだはなく,比較的大きく多角形の管孔がある。胞子紋は黒い。茎は高さ5~15cm,径5~15mm。黒褐色で繊維毛におおわれている。北海道,本州,九州に産し,北アメリカ,ヨーロッパにも分布する。
