Sakamoto

Sakamoto
This is an old village area in the central part of Otsu City, in the southwest of Shiga Prefecture. It is located at the eastern foot of Mt. Hiei. It was established as a village in 1889. It was incorporated into Otsu City in 1951. From the Heian to Muromachi periods, it flourished as a temple town of Enryakuji Temple and a key port on Lake Biwa, but it declined after Oda Nobunaga burned down Mt. Hiei, and was revived as a temple town again in the Edo period. Today, it is home to the Tendai sect's religious office, the various village temples of Enryakuji Temple, and Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine (the main halls of the east and west shrines are national treasures, and the grounds are a nationally designated historic site). The Sanno Festival is famous. Karasaki Pine on the lake shore is one of the Eight Views of Omi, known for "Karasaki Yoame (Evening Rain at Karasaki)."

Sakamoto

This is the former town area in the northwest of Annaka City, in the western part of Gunma Prefecture. It is a settlement at the eastern foot of Usui Pass. It was incorporated as a town in 1889. In 1954, it merged with Matsuida Town and one other town and three villages to form Matsuida Town, and in 2006 it merged with Annaka City. It flourished as a post town on the Nakasendo road until the opening of the Shinetsu Main Line. After World War II, the number of cars crossing Usui Pass increased dramatically due to the improvement of National Route 18, and many drive-ins and rest houses were built in Sakamoto, but in 1971, the Usui Bypass branched off to the south from Yokokawa, and the number of users dropped dramatically.

Sakamoto

The former village area is in the southwest of Yatsushiro City, in the central-southern part of Kumamoto Prefecture. It spreads across the lower reaches of the Kuma River and the southern end of the Kyushu Mountains. In 1961, the villages of Kamimatsukuma, Kudamatsukuma, and Kudaragi merged to form Sakamoto Village. In 2005, it merged with the five municipalities of Yatsushiro City, Sendai Town, Kagami Town, Toyo Village, and Izumi Village to form Yatsushiro City. Forestry is the main industry, and there is a silk reeling factory. After World War II, the development of the Kuma River progressed rapidly, and the Arase Dam was completed.
